In Africa 70% of the crop is wasted because of inadequate cold-chain: better packaging can reduce substantially food waste

When we think about how to feed the world, we have of course to study new cultivation practices, new ways to avoid land overexploitation, to reduce meat consumption and water waste, but we also must remember the importance of finding new food packaging for developing Countries. In Africa, for instance, around 70% of the crop is wasted because of inadequate cold-chain: having an adequate food packaging could help reducing this waste.
This is the battle we are engaged in as UNIDO, together with other partners which have taken part to the first edition of the World Food Research and Innovation Forum. Finding an adequate and sustainable packaging for developing countries, where people lack access to the most basic energy services, is crucial to reduce food waste where cold-chain cannot be taken for granted.
