Special Advisor AGDR – Food and Agricukture Organization of the UN, FAO

Mr. Sonnino graduated in Agricultural Sciences at Bologna University. He works at FAO as Special Advisor/Consultant and at ENEA, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development, as senior scientist. From 2001 to 2014 he worked at FAO as Chief of the Research and Extension Unit, where co-founded the G20 initiative Tropical Agricultural Platform, coordinated the preparation of the flagship publication Innovation in Family Farming, and organized the FAO Conference on Agricultural Biotechnologies in Developing Countries.

From 1981 to 2000, he worked at ENEA as plant breeder and biotechnologist. In 1984 he worked as visiting scientists at the International Potato Center in Peru.

He published over 100 scientific papers, co-authored or edited 12 books, authored 3 varieties and one biotechnology patent. Mr. Sonnino is Vice President of the Italian Association of Graduates in Agriculture (FIDAF) and correspondent member of Accademia dei Georgofili.
