Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Italian Government
After graduating at the Agricultural Technical Institute of Bergamo, he obtained a degree in Political Science. In 1999 he was elected city councilor, a position he held until 2004. In 2004 he was elected Secretary of the Province of Bergamo. In 2006 he was appointed Regional Secretary of the Left Democrats in Lombardy. In 2007 he was among the founders of the Democratic Party. In the same year, as a result of the primaries, he was elected first secretary of the Democratic Party in Lombardy. In 2009, again through the primaries elections, he was re-elected at the leadership of the Lombardy Democratic Party.
In 2010 he was elected as councilor of the Lombardy Region, a position confirmed in the popular consultations in February 2013. He was also a member of the Institutional Affairs Committee and the Productive Activities Commission.
In 2013 served as Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Italian Government
During the same year 2013 he resigned as a councillor of the Lombardy Region. On 24 May 2013, he received the mandate to chair the Coordination Commission for the activities related to EXPO ‘Milano 2015.
In February 22, 2014 he was named Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in the actual Government
