Head of the executive office EFSA

Alberto Spagnolli has been Head of EFSA’s Executive Office since October 2011. His Unit responds directly to the Authority’s Executive Director, offering support on a wide range of issues including strategic planning, organisational performance, quality management and relations with other EU institutions. The Unit also provides the secretariat for EFSA’s Management Board. Before taking up as Head of the Executive Office, Alberto worked for several months as an external expert to EFSA, providing support to the Authority’s activities in the areas of applications and evaluations of regulated products.

Prior to EFSA, Alberto worked for 18 years for the European Commission. His career spanned various fields including EU State aid, antitrust policy, international trade and WTO issues and, most recently, maritime policy and fisheries. In this latter field, he was for several years the Head of Unit responsible for economic issues and EU structural funding for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and for coastal areas. Between 1990 and 1993, Alberto worked as assistant to the CFO of Fochi Energia, a multinational company operating on large engineering and construction projects in the energy sector.

Alberto holds a degree in Economics from the University of Bologna.
